In the German-speaking region, the Environmental awareness continues to increase. The growing awareness also has a noticeable impact on travel behavior.
In a annual study of the Research Association for Vacation and Travel from Kiel, participants were asked how important ecological compatibility, conservation of resources and environmental friendliness were for them on vacation. They were able to give their answers using a scale with the values 1 (unimportant) to 5 (very important). Half of the respondents (52 percent) ranked their answers in the top two categories. Only 13 percent of participants chose values of 1 and 2 in 2018. Environmentally friendly travel has now become a trend.
This progress of environmental awareness has been going on for a long time. Every year, more and more people are attaching importance to "green" travel. Tour operators, such as the tourism company TUI, are now taking advantage of this trend.
"Sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly travel have always been part of TUI's strategy. For example, 30 years ago TUI was the first tourism company to have an Environmental Officer," explained Sustainability Manager Franziska Tritscher.
Other major tour operators such as Thomas Cook and AIDA are now also focusing on saving energy. According to AIDA, the fleet's fuel emissions per passenger have been reduced by more than a third in recent years.
