Austria wants to ban plastic bags by 2020

Vienna. Together, the ÖVP and FPÖ parties want to ban all plastic bags that are not fully biodegradable by 2020. According to Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz of the ÖVP, this is hoped to make an important contribution to counteracting the throwaway society that has emerged. Around 7,000 tons of plastic bags are to be saved annually as a result of this decision.

Environment Minister Elisabeth Köstinger from the ÖVP party added that there are plenty of alternatives that are already available in many stores. She therefore sees the ban on plastic bags as a clear final step. The Ministry of the Environment is also planning a ban on Microplastics in cosmetic products.
