Sore throat is the common symptom of an infection caused by viruses or bacteria. Most often they result from a cold or flu. The germs cause inflammation of the mucous membrane in the throat area.

Overload of the voice or irritation of the respiratory tract

Sore throats can also be caused by overuse of the voice, such as singing, talking for long periods of time, or yelling, as well as respiratory irritation from chemicals, tobacco smoke, dry, dusty air, or other pollutants.

Other causes of sore throat

In addition to illnesses such as colds and flu, scarlet fever, mumps, angina, glandular fever, and esophageal or stomach diseases also frequently cause sore throats. Very rarely, malignant tumors in the throat area are also the trigger of sore throats. In this case, there are usually further complaints such as persistent hoarseness, breathing difficulties or foreign body sensation. A visit to the doctor is then absolutely necessary!

What natural remedies help you against sore throat, I tell you now.

7 natural remedies for sore throat

Now it is clear how sore throat can occur in the first place. But the promised, natural remedies against sore throat I still owe you. I will now list them, including the corresponding explanations, one after the other.

1. drink a lot

In order for your sore throat to disappear as quickly as possible, you should drink a lot. The reason is that the liquid is the dry and attacked mucous membranes moist This makes it more difficult for cold viruses to penetrate deeper areas and multiply.

This also promotes the removal of germs, viruses, bacteria and mucus from the throat. Water is ideal, but there are also special Arzeneitees as a natural home remedy for sore throats, which have with their active ingredients such as sage, thyme, mallow, chamomile or Iceland moss a germicidal, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. This also helps to alleviate the discomfort of swallowing.

2. hot lemon or warm milk with honey

A hot lemon is very soothing for a sore throat during an infection. For this pour the juice of the lemon with 250 milliliters of warm water on. Make sure that the water does not boil, so that the valuable ingredients are not destroyed. You can sweeten the hot lemon with a little honey, as the enzymes it contains strengthen the immune system and fight viruses and bacteria. Warm milk can also be sweetened with honey to benefit from its healing properties.

The warmth is good for the irritated mucous membrane and the throat and helps it to heal. Also, keep your throat consistently warm by wearing a scarf - preferably even while sleeping.

3. onion juice

When it comes to natural remedies for sore throat, you can not forget about onion juice. Taking it has proved equally effective for these ailments. Cut some onions into pieces, put them in a container and cover them with sugar. Let the mixture steep for seven hours, so that the Juice leaks. Take one tablespoon of it twice a day to counteract the sore throat.

4. gargle with a water-salt solution or tea tree oil.

Salt is another natural remedy for sore throat, because it inhibits inflammation. Apply the water-salt solution immediately to the initial sore throat. It cleans the throat area, makes the mucous membranes decongest and kills germs such as bacteria. The salt prevents pathogens from spreading in the body. Stir a teaspoon of household salt into 250 ml of warm water and gargle with it, do not swallow it. You can repeat this up to five times a day. Tea tree oil is another very effective home remedy for sore throat. Add a few drops to a cup of lukewarm water and then gargle. The tea tree oil relieves the pain and has an antibacterial effect.

5. moist throat compress for sore throat

Throat compresses are very beneficial for sore throat. The effective effect is due to the Temperature difference achieved between the body and wrap. Soak the inner layer of the cloth, for example, cotton or linen, with warm or cold water. Over it comes a dry middle layer, for example, a terry towel. The outer layer forms the conclusion. A scarf is suitable for this purpose. A neck wrap, the inner layer of which is very moist, draws heat from the body. This can have an anti-inflammatory and decongestant effect. If the inner layer of the cold neck wrap is well wrung out, on the other hand, a warming effect is produced. This is useful, for example, if you are cold or suffering from chills. You can use wraps as needed.

6. curd, potato or onion wrap

You can spread a finger-thick layer of curd on the wrap and wrap it around your neck for a few hours until the curd dries out. Another option is to mash boiled potatoes and put them hot into the cloth. Tie the potato wrap around your neck when the mixture has cooled down. You can also leave the whole thing on act for several hours.

Onions are also a good home remedy for sore throat. Chop seven onions and heat the onion cubes slightly in a pan. Then spread them on a cloth. The poultice will stay on your throat for about 15 minutes. These options are other natural remedies for sore throat.

7. inhale with chamomile flowers

Inhale has a decongestant effect in the throat and thus can relieve sore throat. Put a handful of loose chamomile flowers in a bowl and pour hot water over them. Bend over it and place a towel over your head to prevent the steam from escaping. Inhale deeply for 60 seconds. Then take a short break before inhaling again. The mucous membranes are moistened and the chamomile has an anti-inflammatory and healing effect. There are also special inhalation devices in the pharmacy that can help you.

  • Drink plenty of water to counteract dehydration of the mucous membranes. It is recommended to drink about 3 liters a day. Those who do a lot of sports have a somewhat higher water requirement.
  • Sauna and alternating showers are great for preventing sore throats, but once you have a sore throat, you should avoid large fluctuations in temperature. In the article about the Cold showers you will get detailed information about it.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid speaking too long and very loudly or even shouting.
  • Keep neck and chest area warm.
  • Sufficiently high humidity in the rooms.
  • Healthy diet, regular exercise and enough sleep to strengthen the immune system. More about this in the articles Sleep better and Strengthen defenses.
  • Avoid chronic stress. Maybe the article with the best Tips for more energy in everyday life more.

Basically, a balanced, healthy lifestyle will be the most effective in preventing you from having a sore throat. If you consciously live a healthy life, you won't even need to use natural home remedies for sore throats.

Use natural remedies for sore throat

When you have cold symptoms like a sore throat, you don't always have to turn directly to antibiotics or other medications. There are tried and tested natural remedies for sore throats that use the power of nature.

You should see your doctor at the latest if the symptoms increase and you do not feel any improvement after a few days despite using home remedies. The same applies if other symptoms such as fever or shortness of breath occur. There are conditions like angina that need to be treated with antibiotics. Otherwise, there may be serious consequences. Keep your throat warm, as heat promotes blood circulation. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids so that the mucous membranes are moistened and, in the case of a cold, the viruses are flushed out.
