For lasting motivation, I would like to briefly explain why nobody should flick a fag on the ground without thinking:

  • Environmental poisoning: Cigarette butts are highly toxic waste - and yet they are the most frequently discarded waste in the world. The approximately 7000 toxic pollutants they contain (including nicotine, arsenic, chromium, copper and lead) are a burden on valuable ecosystems.2
  • Danger to wildlife: Many animals mistake cigarettes for food. Nicotine and other cigarette chemicals are particularly deadly for birds, fish and small animals.
  • Long dismantling time: A cigarette filter is usually made of non-biodegradable plastic. It takes up to 15-400 years for it to decompose completely (to Microplastics) has decomposed.
  • Pollutants in the water: The toxins are washed out by rain and then enter the soil, groundwater and natural waters. Even a single stump contaminates up to 1000 liters of water3.

  1. Create creative and playful disposal optionssuch as "ballot bins".
  2. Raise fines and consistently enforce penalties for throwing away butts.
  3. Introduce Deposit system for cigarette butts a and reward collectors.
  4. Place more public litter garbage cans with ashtrays in the region.
  5. Place warnings for environmental pollution on cigarette packaging.
  6. Promote the development environmentally friendly cigarette alternatives.
