There are around 10 million dogs in Germany that leave a "poop" twice a day. This is currently still mainly removed with a plastic bag. This means that around 15 million plastic bags are used for dog waste every day. At a time when many supermarkets have already said goodbye to plastic bags at the checkout, many dog owners are unfortunately still not aware of this. plastic-free on the daily dog walk.

Since dog owners are obliged by law to pick up and dispose of dog excrement (because dog excrement can contain parasites or pathogens that are harmful not only to dogs, but also to adults and children), this is still done with plastic bags, but every jogger or walker knows the same problem: the plastic bags are very often lying somewhere in the forest or sometimes a few meters in front of the garbage can.

Even if the plastic bag with the excrement is disposed of properly in the trash, this is not good for the environment. Up to 50ml of petroleum and a mixture of chemicals are used to make one plastic bag. Not only does the soil with the Plastic a limited resource (crude oil) is extracted at great expense, but by burning crude oil, a fossil fuel is burned. This releases a large amount of CO2, which boosts the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming.

The so-called organic plastic bag has been around for a few years now. This contains a proportion of renewable raw materials and therefore less crude oil. A good first step, but if you take a closer look, this is just a plastic bag light. Even with this solution, dog owners are still not completely plastic-free.

This is because the renewable raw materials only have a limited share and normally amount to 10-20% and even the premium suppliers only have a share of 30-40%. Apart from the fact that these renewable raw materials take up arable land, i.e. no food can be grown here and large amounts of water are needed to cultivate them, it also means that the rest of the bag is still made up of petroleum and chemicals.

(Comparative studies have shown that biodegradable plastic bags containing renewable raw materials have the highest overall environmental impact and are therefore the worst single-use bag option. For biodegradable plastic bags, a mixture of petroleum-based and renewable raw materials is often used - namely corn-based polylactic acid (PLA) and a fossil-based plastic, such as Ecoflex from BASF. According to information from plastic bag manufacturers, it is not possible to use more than 30 percent of the renewable raw material PLA in carrier bags to ensure that they remain tear-resistant).

Plastic free paper dog waste bag

The new PooPick product offers a completely plastic-free, sustainable and social solution. It is made entirely of paper, 70% of which is recycled paper and the remaining 30% is made from waste from the furniture industry. Not only is this very good for the eco-balance, but no trees have to be felled for the PooPick. As the PooPick is pure biomass, it burns in a climate-neutral way. So dog owners can actually go for a walk without plastic.

The PooPick is more like a scoop than a bag and you can therefore easily pick up dog excrement without touching it. Apart from the ecological benefits, this is also quite nice and another advantage over the plastic bag - just think of the extreme case: diarrhea!

The PooPick is produced entirely in Germany and is folded and dispatched by hand by people with disabilities. This means that every PooPick not only supports nature and the future, but also helps people with disabilities to be included in the world of work.

The packaging was designed with a holistic approach in mind: the wall dispenser, which contains 25 PooPicks, already serves as a shipping box. Unnecessary filling materials or additional shipping material could thus also be saved. Furthermore, the marginal proportion of the adhesive consists of potato starch, which is why the PooPick is also a vegan product.

You can find more information about the PooPick on the website www.thepoopick.com or on their Facebook or Instagram channel.

We are convinced of the holistic concept of the plastic-free PooPick, which is why we have also included it in our store. See for yourself.
