Bethesda, Maryland. Marriott International, the largest hotel chain in the world, is eliminating straws from their offerings as early as July 2019, ensuring not only that their offerings are environmentally friendly, but also that their customers are excited.
Marriott International's decision alone will save one billion straws worldwide each year. The hotel chain's CEO Arne Sorenson told the media that eliminating straws is the easiest way for guests to spend their hotel stay in an environmentally friendly way.
The Hyatt Hotel Corportation announced back in early February 2019 that they would no longer use straws unless guests explicitly asked for them. Environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic straws will be offered to guests, subject to availability. Other hotel chains, such as Hilton Hotels, also want to follow Marriott International's good example.
Marriott International is also trying to save plastic waste in other ways. At the beginning of the year, for example, the small shampoos and shower gels typical of hotels were gradually exchanged for more environmentally friendly versions. The so-called "in-shower dispensers" will be available for use in more than 1,500 hotels in North America by the end of the year.
