Home remedy baking soda for plastic-free household

25 applications for sodium bicarbonate in the home

The Home remedy soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) is versatile in the household and can make life incredibly easier without plastic. Baking soda is a natural mineral (the raw form is nahcolite) that is particularly common and mined in the US state of Colorado. The mineral baking soda has a fat-dissolving, antibacterial and odour-neutralizing effect, making it a versatile household remedy. Both for your health & care, as well as for kitchen & household.

I have compiled a small list of possible applications for Baking soda in the household that can help you avoid a lot of plastic waste. I have tried almost all of these applications myself and can tell you this environmentally friendly packaged soda* recommend. Let's go!

Baking soda in health & care applications

There is nothing more important than our health. A lot of money is spent every year on care products that are often laced with chemical additives and, as we know, can also contain microplastics. In addition to microplastics, the packaging also generates a lot of waste. As the household remedy baking soda is a real all-rounder, it can also help us to make less waste in the area of health & body care.

1. baking soda for the hair

If you stir baking soda into warm water, you can simply massage it into your hair and have a wonderful plastic-free shampoo substitute that degreases your hair and is good for your scalp in a natural way. You can also use baking soda as a home remedy to lighten your hair color! To do this, simply go out in the sun for an hour to dry your hair or leave it to dry under a towel. You then need to rinse the baking soda and water mixture out of your hair.

2. baking soda as deodorant

Simply make your own deodorant using sodium bicarbonate. Take an old spray bottle, 100 ml of boiled and lukewarm water (never more than 49°C!!!) and add 10 drops of essential lime oil and 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda. Then stir a few more times. If it doesn't work, you should add a little more water. Be sure to shake well before each use as the oil will settle. Let us know if it works!
Here you can get essential oil (lime)

3. baking soda for deacidification (detox)

The more acidic the environment (lower pH value), the more comfortable bacteria feel. Sodium hydrogen carbonate helps to deacidify your body. It neutralizes acids and turns them into salts. Unfortunately, I have only found sodium bicarbonate capsules in plastic packaging. Bicarbonate of soda can also be infused into the veins. But you should definitely talk to your GP about this, because baking soda has more "power" than you can imagine. It acts as an antidote to harmful toxins in your body.

4. baking soda for healthy skin

Baking soda is a wonderful household remedy for healthy skin. It detoxifies and promotes blood circulation in your skin. Declare war on acne, athlete's foot and the like with baking soda. For example, you can soak yourself in a bath with baking soda water.

5. bicarbonate of soda against hangover

As baking soda is alkaline, it counteracts the acidity in the stomach and neutralizes it. It therefore helps you with stomach complaints and acid reflux after a night of drinking and reduces your hangover.

6. baking soda against blackheads

There are many advertised products that are supposed to help against blackheads. The cheap and plastic-free alternative is the household remedy baking soda. Again, you can mix the baking soda paste with a little water. Apply the mixture to your nose and massage it in. The baking soda home remedy removes dead skin cells and excess oil from your skin. This also removes the actual cause of blackheads.

7. baking soda for/against cystitis

Baking soda inhibits bacterial growth in the gut by raising the pH value. This alkalization further strengthens your intestine's natural bacterial defences and the bladder infection can pass quickly. To do this, drink a glass with a level teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate 2-3 times a day. However, bicarbonate of soda is only a quick fix. If you have a bladder infection, I therefore recommend that you also consult a doctor.

8. baking soda as toothpaste

Baking soda and salt make a mixture in which you can dip your toothbrush and prevent plaque and discoloration. However, this mixture should not be used as a permanent toothpaste substitute. There is another wonderful alternative solution to conventional toothpaste. Since toothpaste creates a lot of plastic waste and often contains questionable ingredients, you should choose your own toothpaste. Simply make your own toothpaste with coconut oil.

9. bicarbonate of soda against sore throat

Baking soda is also super effective against sore throats. Simply prepare a "gargle solution" with a teaspoon of baking soda and 200 ml of water. Stir vigorously and gargle with the liquid three times a day.

10. baking soda against bad breath

Baking soda not only cleans the teeth, but also helps wonderfully against bad breath. Again, fill a glass with water, add a teaspoon of baking soda and gargle three times a day. The sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the pH value of your mouth. Simply use it like a conventional mouthwash or mouthwash.

11. baking soda after sunburn

Your skin is already burnt and you usually walk around like a crab for a few days. The home remedy baking soda will help you here too: Pour some water into a small tub and add about a teaspoon of baking soda per liter. Now you can soak your clothes that are lying directly on the burnt areas (T-shirt etc. or a normal cloth) in the water and then put them on or place them on your skin. In this way, baking soda is a good help against sunburn and promotes the regeneration of your skin.

12. baking soda against sweaty feet

As baking soda has the wonderful property of neutralizing odours, you can also use baking soda as a natural foot bath against sweaty feet. Sodium bicarbonate makes your skin much softer.

13. sodium bicarbonate against heartburn

Baking soda has been used to treat heartburn for many decades. Simply dissolve another teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it. But as a long-term solution to heartburn, I recommend that you tackle the causes. Drink less alcohol, exercise more and eliminate mental stress.

14. baking soda as a bath additive

Run a warm bath (not hotter than 49°C because sodium bicarbonate will turn into caustic soda and damage your skin) and add about 100g of baking soda. Your skin will be so soft and clean that you can do without plastic waste from any creams. You can also combine your bath with bath salts from the Dead Sea.

Using baking soda in the kitchen & household

In addition to its use for health and care, baking soda also has fantastic uses in the kitchen and household. You can use baking soda to make or solve many things yourself, for which we would probably have preferred a chemical household remedy from a plastic bottle under normal circumstances. In the kitchen and household, for example, you can use the miracle cure sodium bicarbonate as follows:

15. baking soda as scouring milk

You can make your own scouring milk from baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch and save yourself a lot of plastic waste. Even without citric acid and cornstarch, you can combine baking soda with a little water to make a paste that packs a punch. Stubborn stains on kitchen utensils or stains from carpets can be removed wonderfully with baking soda. With carpets, you can simply sprinkle the baking soda powder on the dirty areas, leave it to work for half a day and then vacuum it up. It works perfectly and is easy on the nerves. 😉 You can buy citric acid and cornstarch here:
Citric acid is available here
You can get cornstarch here

16. baking soda as a washing-up liquid

As already mentioned, baking soda and washing soda are not the same thing. Although washing soda is often recommended for making your own washing-up liquid, baking soda is clearly the more skin-friendly solution. I tried it out straight away. Here are exact instructions on how to make your own Make your own washing-up liquid simply by following your heart.

17. sodium bicarbonate as a detergent

You can actually simply add baking soda to the detergent compartment of your washing machine, just like regular detergent. In addition to the baking soda detergent, I have also put together many plastic-free alternatives for you here, which you can use to clean your laundry. Make detergent yourself simply by following your heart.

18. baking soda against odors from trash cans

Sodium bicarbonate is an odour neutralizer and is therefore also ideal for combating strong smells from the garbage can. Simply cover the bottom of your garbage can with 3 teaspoons of baking soda. In any case, the whole base of the garbage can should be covered with baking soda. The baking soda will now remove unpleasant odors for a certain period of time. If it starts to stink at some point, cover the base of the garbage can with new bicarbonate of soda. Simply rinse the previously used baking soda down the sink and do something good for the drainpipes too. Why do this? Next paragraph 🙂

19. sodium bicarbonate as a pipe cleaner

Forget the chemical pipe cleaners in the plastic bottle and try baking soda and vinegar first. Baking soda dissolves grease and has an antibacterial effect. Simply add 5-10 tablespoons of baking soda and then half a cup of vinegar to the drain. When baking soda and vinegar react with each other, carbon dioxide is produced. This "blasts" the blockage in a natural way without shooting chemicals down the drain. You can buy vinegar in a glass bottle at any supermarket, so you don't need to order it online.

20. baking soda as a digestive aid

Baking soda can neutralize excess acid from food and weaken its effect in the gut. It is said that "peas, beans and lentils make your ass grin". Add a little baking soda to the cooking water when boiling to prevent flatulence.

21. bicarbonate of soda as a room spray

As sodium bicarbonate has an odour-neutralizing effect, it is also perfect for use as a room spray. All you need is a preferably reused (400 ml) spray bottle, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and boiled water (approx. 250 ml). If you like, you can also add a little essential oil (lemon, etc.) depending on the scent you want. Stir the baking soda into the warm water and stir regularly. Your new room spray with baking soda will neutralize unwanted odours in your home.
Here you can get the right essential oil (lemon)

22. baking soda as a cooking aid

Does cooking pulses take a little too long? Just grab a level teaspoon of baking soda and add it to the cooking water. This will cook peas, beans and lentils much faster.

23. baking soda as oven cleaner

In around 10 minutes, you can make your own oven cleaner using baking soda as a household remedy. All you need is 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of salt and 1-2 tablespoons of water. Mix everything together in a bowl to make the familiar baking soda paste. Now you can spread it in the oven with a cloth, just like any conventional oven cleaner. After 20 minutes, you can wipe everything off. Make sure that all the baking soda is then removed from the oven.

24. baking soda as a mold remover

Sodium bicarbonate is the ideal mold remover due to its abrasive effect (e.g. as scouring milk). It is aggressive enough to remove stains without damaging the surfaces. As baking soda also has a natural antibacterial effect, it can also remove mold permanently. Perhaps you are familiar with that slight build-up of mold in the joints between bathroom tiles? These joints can be perfectly removed with a used toothbrush and a little baking soda!

25. baking soda as toilet cleaner

Maybe you know those brown edges on the toilet? You can solve the problem easily and plastic-free with baking soda. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the relevant areas and leave the mineral to work for about a quarter of an hour. You can also clean the elbow (the pipe) of the toilet with baking soda. I recommend leaving it to work for about 30 minutes after adding a tablespoon of baking soda to the water. You can also make your own toilet tabs from baking soda!

Is baking soda the ideal natural household remedy?

A clear YES! And it supports plastic-free living like no other natural material! I have two important things to say at the end of this article:

  • You should not experiment with baking soda during pregnancy! At least not without consulting your family doctor. Because a balanced acid balance is also important for the healthy development of your child.
  • Likelihood of confusion: In addition to baking soda, there are other household remedies that are so versatile and have a similar chemical name. One of these is soda (sodium carbonate). Soda is an even more aggressive household remedy and should be used with even more caution than baking soda. Soda ash can easily irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and should therefore be used with even more caution.

Just make sure that you always have real baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) in your hands for the areas of application mentioned above.

Here you can get the famous Kaisernatron in the plastic-free 250g package

Baking soda is a super product, also for health. However, to my knowledge come with
KAISERNATRON chemical additives to use!!! Even if it is packaged plastic-free and is an old home remedy, you should check the production.
Natron (sodium hydrogen carbonate) has been known since early antiquity. In Egypt, it was extracted from the lakes in the Natron Valley (Wadi Natrun). This is in Lower Egypt. There it still occurs in natural form today. Natron is also extracted in the United States of America. Namely from the salt "Trona". Natron (sodium hydrogen carbonate) is also found as a natural ingredient in many mineral waters and medicinal springs. It is indicated under the ingredient "hydrogen carbonate ion". In Europe, sodium hydrogen carbonate (natron) is extracted from natural table salt in the 21st century. In the process, chlorine is exchanged for carbonate, i.e. carbonic acid.
